Manchester Zoo takes step closer to happening

The team that is looking to open a new multi-million pound zoo in Manchester has taken a step closer to making their dream a reality, with a location in Rochdale chosen.

Manchester Zoo, the company set up by former zookeeper Johnpaul Houston is in advanced talks with Rochdale Council about securing an 100 acre site near Hopwood Hall in Middleton. A public consultation is expected to take place later this year ahead of the submission of a planning application.

According to Manchester Zoo the destination will “create a world class animal collection, supported through strong messages of conservation, education and research. The zoo will be underpinned by a huge community facet, using pioneering social science programmes to engage and educate the local community”.

Funding for the first phase of the development of the zoo has already been secured, but crowdfunding is still in place for speeding up the process of further work.
